They are tucked away inside the engine, they are small enough to hold in your palm, and replacing them is rarely the first thing that comes to mind when a car starts feeling off. Yet spark plugs are responsible for one of the most fundamental actions your engine performs — igniting the air and fuel mixture that drives every single power stroke. How Spark Plugs Work

Inside each cylinder of your engine, a carefully measured mixture of air and fuel is compressed under high pressure. To release that energy, the mixture needs to be ignited at a precise moment in the piston's travel. That job belongs to the spark plug.

A high-voltage electrical pulse from the ignition coil travels down to the spark plug and jumps the gap between the center electrode and the ground electrode, creating a spark. That spark triggers combustion, forcing the piston down and turning the crankshaft — producing the power that moves your car. This happens hundreds of times per minute, in each cylinder, for the entire time the engine is running.

Because the conditions inside a firing cylinder involve extreme heat, pressure, and chemical exposure, spark plugs are engineered to very tight tolerances. The electrode material, the gap width, the heat range, and the thread pitch all have to be exactly right for your engine to run cleanly and efficiently. A plug that does not meet factory specification — even slightly — can cause the engine management system to work harder, increase fuel consumption, or trigger fault codes.
